about

All these tracks were created between 1992-94. At that time I had left university but thanks to the Tory-induced crash of 1991 had graduated into a dystopian world of unemployment and pointless "training" schemes designed more to keep us off the figures than to give us any real employment prospects. I found myself in 1992 travelling to an industrial site in Wednesbury where I spent my days with an affable group of people devising playlets to teach local schoolkids the dangers of joy riding or talking to strangers. We frequently decided we'd done enough at lunchtime and retired to the local pub for the afternoon where we chewed the fat about music, politics and sport in a much more friendly way than you might imagine those three subjects to go in a Black Country pub of an afternoon.

It was around this time that a friend of mine decided he'd no longer any need of his Atari ST and gave it to me. I quickly began using it for music and exploring sequencing, and the tracks on this release were some of the results.

All tracks were recorded direct to musicassette. My recent Linear Obsessional release "An Equal and Opposite Reaction" is on cassette too. I'm thinking a lot at the moment about recording formats and how they affect our reception and perception of music.

This release is dedicated to the STAMP* crew - Martyn, Andy, Daljit, Joe, Jacquie, Caroline, Michael and others whose names I've forgotten, none of whom I've seen in over 25 years. Perhaps somehow these recordings will find their way to some of them.
